Halt. Pause. Freeze. Put down the pretzels and pistachios, drop the ice cream spoon. Take.a.closer.look.at.this.exact.splice.in.time — even if it feels like replaying your well-worn addiction movie. Maybe this is the moment I/you can turn a different way. This is #2, Clover, in my flower-titled series on sugar addiction.

An album cover by The Fool for the British psychedelic folk group The Incredible String Band.

This moment is different from any before it
This moment is different — it’s now.

— “This Moment,” The Incredible String Band, released in U.K. in 1970

Alice, stop. Alice, stop. Alice, stop.

Stop interrupting this moment to email your last workplace about receiving the wrong 1099 form. Cease giving long answers to Skippy’s Qs and comments as she does remote seventh grade from the sofa.

Is it really bad to have a baby three weeks early? (She saw that on “Criminal Minds.”)

Should I have kale chips or make sweet potato fries for my snack now?

I like science class. It’s really easy.

Alice, stop. Tell her you can’t talk. Tell her you are writing. You are working.

Be present —in this moment.

Be brave. Face the dark.
