I didn't use the word "nice" in the essay but I did try to flesh out Susan (no skin-color pun intended) as a fuller person, not one-sided and not racially motivated.

I like what you wrote here:

"Niceness is not inherently incompatible with racism. The idea that it is allows racism to flourish."

I am going to ponder that.
