Addiction Recovery Story #21, Queen of Night Tulip: Just Walk Away at Smashburger

Big difference at Smashburger. I go rarely, but sometimes got a 650-calorie burger, 870-calorie milkshake and 420-calorie fries (1,940 calories total) — or I’d long for that trio but “settle” for naked grilled chicken on a bun. This calorie and fat overload was even after a doctor checkup and advice to lose weight; not sane thinking. I can see clearly now. This is #21 in my flower-titled series about sugar and overeating addiction.

I went for my annual checkup this week at the pulmonologist. Patients, young and old, heavy and slim, lug in their bedside “Dream Machines” in gray zippered bags so doctors can read the sleep data and make sure the tubing and masks are up to snuff.

I’ve been using my CPAP at bedtime since 2017. My blood pressure and blood oxygen continue to improve and my weight was down 10 pounds from last March. And: I used to stop breathing about 75 times per minute with severe sleep apnea. That’s dipped to twice a minute. (My husband, Dan, said he was afraid I was going to have an overnight stroke since I was gasping for air so much. I also used to take long naps every day.)

After seeing that doctor, I generally stop at Smashburger, in the same plaza, for lunch. This time, I ordered the grilled chicken with lettuce, tomato and onion on a…
